Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day 2012 was the busiest day we've ever had since we opened in 1996. Over 400 new releases came out on Saturday April 21, and Love Music stocked the vast majority of them. We had a queue of around 100 people when we opened at 9:00 am, and mercifully it stayed dry for most of the day. Fran's tea stall pumped out the free tea and coffee all day, and once again Fran designed two special Record Store Day cakes, Rock Icons and Picture Discs, which went down a treat with the crowd. Live music kicked off with a set from DOLALAY. Based in Hollywood California, Dolalay have a Scottish singer, Rebecca Connelly, and a new EP called "Days Like This" . Check them out at http://www.dolalaymusic.com/

Edinburgh group the CATHODE RAY were next, and played songs from their new self-titled album, which was BBC Radio Scotland's Janice Forsyth Show's Album of the Month April 2012. Late 70s New York angular meets post-punk Manchester.Check them out at: https://www.facebook.com/thecathoderay

WHITE HEATH, the Edinburgh group who released an album on Stow College's Electric Honey record label last year, went on next. Famous for having a trombonist instead of a bass player, they mixed things up with a "techno set" and won some new fans with their performance. Find them at https://www.facebook.com/whiteheath

The excellent FRENCH WIVES played some new songs from their debut album "Dream of the Inbetween", released on May 7th on the Electric Honey label. It's already one of our Albums of the Year, and deserves to be heard by every music lover. Timings were slipping over the course of the afternoon, so shop favourites WOODENBOX (who have dropped the Fistful of Fivers handle) didn't start playing until 5pm. They played a blinding set of old favourites and crackin' new tunes from their forthcoming second album. The Sunday Herald had been told Admiral Fallow were on at 5, so a photographer showed up, took pictures and left. The photo of Woodenbox in the paper the next day was captioned "Admiral Fallow". To close the festivities we were pleased to welcome back ADMIRAL FALLOW. We were selling freshly-pressed vinyl copies of their debut album "Boots Met My Face", which was an Official UK Record Store Day release, and they treated us to some songs from their excellent second album "Tree Bursts in Snow".   https://www.facebook.com/AdmiralFallow?ref=ts

We'd like to thank everybody who made Record Store Day 2012 such a success, especially our customers who showed up in such huge numbers, and supported us with their purchases. Times are tough in independent music retail, and this day cleared a lot of bills and put a smile back on our faces. Thanks to our staff members and also our friends: Joe Logue for the PA, Rob Ross and Robert Fenton for minding the door, and Fran Schoppler for the tea stall and cakes.
